Aeration

Why You Should Aerate Your Lawn in the Spring or Fall

Any lawn can benefit from aeration. This essential lawn care task is imperative to help you achieve a healthy, growing lawn. It can be confusing to know when it’s the best time to aerate your Muncie property. At All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC, we typically perform this task in the spring and/or fall. This is because there are three conditions that we assess before we begin aerating: type of grass, weather conditions, and amount of moisture. Keep reading to learn why these conditions are so important for lawn aeration.

Type of Grass

The best time to aerate your lawn is when there is the most root growth. This occurs differently for both warm-season and cool-season grasses. Warm-season grasses, like Bermuda, St. Augustine, or Centipede, have the most root growth in May and June. For cool-season grasses, like bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue, this typically takes place in the fall.

Weather Conditions

Aeration creates tiny holes in lawns, removing a small portion called a core, and leaving holes that allow for better nutrient absorption and less compaction. If the weather is too cold and the ground freezes, this can cause roots that are close to the core holes to die off. Keeping your grass strong and healthy right before winter arrives will give it a healthy advantage in the spring as it begins to grow again.

Amount of Moisture

The amount of moisture in your lawn can greatly affect the health of your lawn, both positively and negatively. In order for the aeration equipment to work properly and create optimal core holes, the ground must be moist. The best time to aerate a lawn is right after a good rainfall. If rain is not in the forecast, watering your lawn until there’s a half-inch on the ground will also give it the right amount of moisture.
