4 Tips for Tree & Shrub Care in the Spring

When the snow has melted and spring flowers are budding, it’s time to start thinking about your trees and shrubs. Proper care for trees and shrubs in the spring will give them a healthy advantage for the rest of the year. All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC recommends following these four tips when nurturing your trees and shrubs in the spring.

1. Inspect Trees & Shrubs

Winter can greatly affect the condition of the trees on your property. Freezing temperatures can cause the bark to split or evergreens to brown from winter burn. The first step in spring tree care is to treat these issues in order to prevent any further damage. If you’re unsure of how to nourish your trees or bushes back to health, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

2. Prune Dead or Damaged Branches

The next step is to prune any dead branches or damaged limbs. Trimming and clipping branches can improve airflow and allow light to penetrate the plant. When pruning flowering trees and shrubs, wait until the first bloom. If you prune before then, your greenery will produce fewer flowers.

3. Add Mulch

Mulch is essential in helping to retain moisture and keeping your bushes or trees from drying out. It can also prevent weeds from growing and lessen the likelihood of pests invading like emerald ash borer, ants, and beetles. At All Brothers, we recommend placing about three inches of mulch around the base of your trees and shrubs. Be sure not to pile it up the trunk as this can cause decay.

4. Begin Watering

The best time to begin watering your trees and bushes is when they look like they could use some extra moisture. It’s best to water thoroughly and for a long time every so often rather than lightly each day. If you’re experiencing an exceptionally dry spring, you may need to water more often. The best thing to do is monitor moisture levels and water them as needed, ensuring they don’t dry out.
